The 12 Cellists of The Berlin Philharmonic are a renowned ensemble drawn from the Berlin Philharmonic. Founded in 1972 after a landmark radio performance of Julius Klengel’s Hymnus for twelve cellos, they’ve been described as an “orchestra within an orchestra.” Their unique sound blends classical masterworks with jazz, tango, and avant-garde repertoire, and several contemporary composers have written for the group.
