Born in Chicago during the mid-1970s, 21st Century emerged from a collaborative group effort led by Freddie Williams, Alphonso Smith, Tyrone Moores, Pierre Johnson, and Alonzo Martin. They began releasing material on Golden Tone and RCA, laying the groundwork for a distinct blend of soul, funk, and early disco influences. Their debut album Ahead Of Our Time arrived on RCA Victor in 1975, signaling a strong entrance into the national scene.

The musical character
As the group evolved into 21st Creation and released Break Thru in 1978 on Gordy (Motown), they continued to push their sound forward. One of the band’s most enduring tracks, Remember The Rain?, released in 1974/75, became a cult classic and has since been sampled by a range of artists. The group also made a memorable appearance on Soul Train in 1975, cementing their place in the era’s soul and funk canon.
