James Reese Europe (1881–1919) was a visionary composer, arranger, and conductor whose influence on early jazz and American music remains enduring. Born in Alabama and raised in New York, Europe founded the Clef Club and led the Army's 369th Infantry Regiment Band, also known as the Harlem Hellfighters, during World War I. His innovative approach fused European military band tradition with African American musical idioms, pushing rhythm, harmony, and improvisation forward.
