The Actors’ Gang is a veteran touring theatre company founded in 1981 in Los Angeles by Tim Robbins and a collective of fellow artists. Known for immersive, commedia dell’arte–inflected productions and bold, socially engaged work, the company has built a robust touring footprint that reaches audiences beyond Southern California. 1984, a long-running centerpiece of the troupe’s repertoire, invites spectators into a surround/stage-within-a-square setup that places Winston Smith and the interrogators under constant scrutiny. This approach heightens the sense of surveillance and coercion, offering a visceral, thought-provoking experience that remains relevant to contemporary themes of power and resistance.
