Afrotease is a bold, expressive burlesque showcase founded in 2016 by Venessa Chevelle. Based in Virginia, Afrotease has established itself as the state’s longest-running platform dedicated to performers of color and gender-nonconforming acts, presenting a distinct event experience rather than a traditional burlesque show. Since its inception, Gallery5 in Richmond, VA has served as the home for Afrotease, bringing together diverse talent from the East Coast and beyond.

Chevelle began performing burlesque in 2014 with a mission to create a safe, creative space where performers of color can express themselves freely. Afrotease grew from that goal, highlighting vibrant performances, storytelling, and a welcoming environment for all identities. While there may not be publicly announced Afrotease-specific tours for 2025, the Richmond scene remains active with burlesque events at Gallery5, including the annual Reveal Revue.
