Welcome to an insider’s guide to Ainadamar, the groundbreaking opera by Osvaldo Golijov. Born in 1960 in La Plata, Argentina, Golijov is a MacArthur Fellow celebrated for blending Jewish, Latin American, Arab, and classical traditions into vibrant, emotionally charged works. Ainadamar, first staged in 2003, weaves a triadic visual and musical tapestry about the poet Federico García Lorca and the remarkable Margarita Xirgu. The piece combines a vivid libretto by David Henry Hwang with Golijov’s signature sound—where flamenco, klezmer, tango, Sephardic chant, and contemporary orchestration meet.
