Since its inception in 1959, the race has become known as the sport’s richest Quarter Horse spectacle. In 2024, the event moved from Ruidoso Downs (New Mexico) to The Downs at Albuquerque (New Mexico) after flood damage, and the 2025 edition continues at the Albuquerque venue.
