The Alternative Black Arts Festival is more than a festival—it's a global cultural movement that centers Black creativity, sound, visual art, and performance. Founded in 2005 in Brooklyn by James Spooner and Matthew Morgan, the festival evolved from the Afro-Punk documentary into a multi-city platform that has showcased artists, filmmakers, musicians, and creatives from around the world. Over the years, the festival expanded its footprint to cities such as Atlanta, Paris, London, Salvador, Dakar, and Johannesburg, forging a worldwide network of artists and audiences who celebrate Black art in all its forms. In 2020, Essence Ventures acquired the festival, signaling a broader media and cultural platform while keeping a focus on authentic Black creativity. In 2024, the Brooklyn edition rebranded as BLKTOPIA and found a home at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park (August 23–24, 2024). For 2025, Brooklyn paused BLKTOPIA in favor of AFROPUNK Brasil 2025, with a Brazil edition announced for November 2025 in Salvador, Bahia.
