Appalasia Tickets

Appalasia is a Pittsburgh-born ensemble blending Appalachian folk traditions with Asian musical influences. Formed by Mimi Jong (erhu/zhonghu), Jeff Berman (dulcimer, vibraphone), and Sue Powers (banjo), the group creates original compositions with room for improvisation. Their sound merges the warmth of mountain dulcimer and clawhammer banjo with the expressive tones of erhu and zhonghu to produce a cross-cultural folk experience that feels both familiar and adventurous.

Inspired by both American and Asian musical lineages, Appalasia invites listeners to a collaborative listening experience where traditional forms meet new ideas. The band’s work has earned recognition, including Mimi Jong receiving the 2014 Master Artists and Tradition Bearers Award from Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area, highlighting their contribution to preserving and sharing traditional arts with contemporary audiences.

Discography highlights include the duo albums Cargo (2015) and Pu An (2010), both released on Appalasia Recordings. While no widely published charting singles exist, the ensemble continues to perform original material with a focus on live improvisation and cross-cultural storytelling.
