Arturs Maskats, born December 20, 1957 in Valmiera, Latvia, is a distinguished figure in contemporary classical music. A graduate of the Latvian State Conservatory, Maskats has shaped Latvian musical identity through theater, film, and concert works. Since 1996, he has served as the artistic director of the Latvian National Opera, overseeing a prolific career as a composer and conductor. His signature orchestral piece, Tango (2002), remains a cornerstone of modern Latin-inflected orchestration and has been featured by the Wiener Philharmoniker in 2022 and widely performed around the world.
