Founded in 1996 by artistic director Nicolette Moonen, Bach and Before represents a distinctive approach to early music. The project bridges Bach-era works with earlier German, French, Italian, and contemporaneous composers, presenting a cohesive listening experience that highlights connections across the Baroque era. The ensemble-related lineage traces back to The Bach Players, known for period-instrument performances across the UK and Europe. While the group operated under the broader Bach-era umbrella, Bach and Before stands out for its themed recordings and scholarly focus on repertoire that expands Bach’s musical context.
