The Ballet Arts Ensemble (BAE) is Kalamazoo’s oldest and largest youth ballet company. Founded in 1982 by Jerre James and Bette Joachimi, BAE has a long-standing mission to promote ballet and expand educational opportunities for young dancers in the Kalamazoo community. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Betty Kondo since 2024, BAE continues to grow as a cornerstone of dance education and performance in southwestern Michigan.

BAE typically presents two major public productions each season, ranging from full-length ballets to mixed-repertoire showcases. Every other year, the company collaborates with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra (KSO) and the Kalamazoo Children’s Chorus for The Nutcracker, a beloved holiday event that draws audiences from across the region.
