Beethoven, a German composer (1770–1827), helped shape the transition from Classical to Romantic music. Choral Fantasy, Op. 80 for piano, vocal soloists, mixed chorus, and orchestra, is often viewed as a showcase that foreshadows the expressive breadth of his later works. The piece opens with a virtuosic piano introduction, advances through variations for ensemble, and culminates in a dramatic finale with chorus. Typically performed in two movements (Adagio, Finale – Allegro with various sections), it runs about 20 minutes and is performed without a break.
