Documented collaborators

The Berkeley Middle School Jazz Band is a vibrant, collaborative program that brings together three exceptional groups from the Berkeley Unified School District: the King Middle School Jazz Band, the Willard Middle School Jazz Band, and the Longfellow Middle School Jazz Band. This trio forms a powerful pipeline to Berkeley High School Jazz, nurturing young musicians as they develop technical skill, ensemble listening, and a love for live performance. Our mission is straightforward: help talented students secure opportunities to perform at renowned venues, gain real-world experience, and connect with a broader jazz community.

As of 2025, the bands were led by dedicated directors who guide rehearsals, repertoire selection, and community engagement: King Middle School Jazz Band under Nancy Boyles, Willard Middle School Jazz Band under Roland Brown, and Longfellow Middle School Jazz Band under Jonah Andreatta. By 2026, Longfellow Middle School Jazz Band welcomed Jay Maddox as director, continuing a tradition of strong leadership and mentorship.
