As a founding member of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, Kirchen helped shape the sound of early 1970s vintage rock with a twangy, high-energy style. The band’s breakout hit “Hot Rod Lincoln” helped bring roadside rockabilly and country-infused rock to a national audience, reaching No. 9 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1972.

Beyond Commander Cody, Kirchen has built a prolific solo career and collaborative discography, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Country Instrumental Performance for “Poultry In Motion” in 2001.
