Billy Emerson was a pivotal figure in 1950s American rhythm & blues and rock ’n’ roll, born in Tarpon Springs, Florida. A magnet for early rock ’n’ roll energy, Emerson cut his teeth alongside Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm and released influential singles on Sun Records, Vee-Jay, and Chess. He’s best remembered for the Sun single Red Hot and for tracks later covered by Elvis Presley and other titans of rock. In 1966, Emerson launched Tarpon Records, a nod to his Florida roots. His enduring legacy is reflected in his induction into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the 2017 Florida Folk Heritage Award. Bear Family’s extensive collection Red Hot: The Sun Years, Plus (2009) helps fans rediscover his Sun/Vee-Jay/Chess era material. Although no 2025 tour dates exist and Emerson passed away in 2023, his music continues to inspire artists and fans around the world. We’ve got you with a concise bio, essential discography highlights, and reliable information for fans and new listeners alike.
