Blue Canvas Orchestra (BCO) formed circa 1985 as the house band for Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua and has evolved into a cornerstone of Wisconsin’s folk, blues, bluegrass, and Americana storytelling scene. Core members include Phil Anich, Ed Willett, and a network of musicians rooted in Warren Nelson’s circle. The ensemble is known for large-scale, history-driven productions that blend music with narrative, capturing local folklore and regional history in an accessible, concerted format.

In 2022, BCO opened The Backstage, a year-round venue that solidified the group as a year-round resident ensemble. The project landscape includes landmark productions such as 30th Star: Wisconsin’s Sesquicentennial and Riding the Wind, a luminous history show that has toured Wisconsin and beyond. The band remains a respected voice in the Midwest, balancing tradition with contemporary storytelling.

In 2025, the Blue Canvas Orchestra helped inaugurate a first collective bargaining agreement with AFM Local 18, marking a notable milestone in artist rights and professional standards for the ensemble.

Upcoming tour dates bring BCO to communities across Wisconsin and beyond. Highlights include an April 28 performance in Richland Center titled American Stories, a August 3 stop at Big Top Chautauqua for Riding the Wind, a September 5 return to Big Top Chautauqua with Old Last Night, and a November 15 show at The Park Center in Hayward featuring Back to the Garden/ Woodstock themes.
