Bouand Dance Company was a distinctive Portland-based contemporary ballet ensemble that explored European-inspired movement with an American sensibility. Founded in 2005 by Alexandrous Ballard, the company sought to push the boundaries of contemporary ballet while staying rooted in rigorous technique and expressive storytelling. Though they announced an indefinite hiatus in June 2012 after seven seasons, Bouand’s influence continues to be felt in Portland’s dance community and in archival conversations about the era of local contemporary ballet.
