Biography
Brian Hughes builds bridges between jazz, world music, and contemporary composition. His blend of smooth jazz textures with Latin grooves and world-music colors is shaped by mastery on guitar, oud, and bouzouki. As a longtime collaborator and producer for Loreena McKennitt, Hughes helped shape a sonic universe that fuses Celtic storytelling with global rhythms. His work with the Secret Sky collective—featuring Caroline Lavelle and Hugh Marsh—has yielded two albums, Secret Sky (2016) and Opium (2023), each showcasing his adventurous approach to melody and texture.
Hughes has been recognized by SOCAN and BMI with Jazz & Instrumental Composer of the Year honors across multiple years (1997–2001, 2006, 2008). He earned a Juno nomination for the producer role on The Visit (1991), underscoring his impact behind the scenes as well as on stage. In 2025, Hughes returns to intimate venues across the United States, delivering performances that emphasize storytelling, musical dialogue, and a direct connection with audiences.
