Born as those famous zydeco roots, Buckwheat Zydeco—led by the late Stanley Dural Jr.—became a global ambassador for Louisiana music. His high-energy accordion and fearless fusion helped define modern zydeco. He earned multiple Grammy nominations beginning in 1985 with 100% Fortified Zydeco, followed by Turning Point (1986), Waitin’ For My Ya Ya (1987), and On a Night Like This (1988), before taking home the Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album in 2010 for Lay Your Burden Down (produced by Steve Berlin). He performed at the 1996 Olympics closing ceremony and played for U.S. presidents at inaugurations, cementing his role as a cultural ambassador.

Following his passing on September 24, 2016 due to lung cancer, Buckwheat Zydeco's musical family—led by Buckwheat Zydeco Jr.—continued the Ils Sont Partis Band, preserving and evolving the zydeco tradition for new generations.

In 2025, Buckwheat Zydeco Jr. and the Ils Sont Partis Band are touring with new regional dates continuing the family zydeco tradition. Recent shows include destinations such as Norwich, NY; Holyoke, MA; and Buffalo, NY.
