The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto is a product of the collaborative genius of He Zhanhao and Chen Gang. Composed and completed in 1959, the final version premiered May 27, 1959 in Shanghai with Yu Lina as the soloist. The concerto is structured as a single movement across seven sections, with the violin representing Zhu Yingtai, and the cello representing Liang Shanbo. Its melodic language leans on pentatonic scales and Yue Opera influences, capturing a poignant narrative that transcends language and borders.Over the decades, the work has become a cultural touchstone in China and internationally, recognized for its emotional depth and musical ingenuity. It has earned significant acclaim, including five Golden Record prizes and a Platinum Record prize, and it experienced a celebrated revival following the Cultural Revolution.
