Cafe Müller is a pivotal figure in contemporary dance and Tanztheater, closely tied to the legendary choreographer Pina Bausch and the Tanztheater Wuppertal ensemble. Known for intimate, emotionally charged performances, Cafe Müller blends stark physicality with theatrical storytelling, drawing on Baroque and Baroque-adjacent musical textures via Henry Purcell materials used in original productions, most notably from The Fairy Queen and Dido and Aeneas. Premiering on 20 May 1978 at Opernhaus Wuppertal, this piece has since become a defining work of the Wuppertal company and the broader dance world.
