People behind the production
Captain Louie is a charming, kid-centered performer project rooted in a rich heritage of musical storytelling. With music and lyrics by the legendary Stephen Schwartz and a book by Anthony Stein, the musical draws inspiration from Ezra Jack Keats's The Trip. The work debuted Off-Broadway in 2005 at the York Theatre Company, followed by a 2005 Little Shubert engagement. A national tour ran from 2006 to 2007 across 25 U.S. cities, directed by Meridee Stein and produced by James William Productions. The project remains a notable part of Schwartz’s acclaimed catalog, celebrated for its melodic, accessible style that invites audiences of all ages into imaginative worlds.
