With a history rooted in a rigorous London music scene and a track record of world premieres, Castalian String Quartet contributed to contemporary discourse through performances, recordings, and collaborations with living composers. The group held the Hans Keller String Quartet in Residence at the Oxford University Faculty of Music (2021–24), with the residency extended through 2027 following a Cosman Keller Art & Music Trust gift. They earned early recognition by winning First Prize at the Lyon International Chamber Music Competition in 2015, and were selected by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) in 2016. The Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship (2018), Merito String Quartet Award, and Valentin Erben Prize (also around 2018), alongside the Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artist of the Year (2019), marked a distinguished period of growth and visibility.
Notable moments include world premieres and collaborations with living composers, such as Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Awake, premiered in 2023 at the Edinburgh International Festival. Their 2022 album Between Two Worlds (Delphian) received critical acclaim and was named BBC Music Magazine’s Album of the Month, featuring a program spanning Renaissance to contemporary works by Lassus, Dowland, Beethoven, and Adès.
In 2025, the ensemble announced its disbandment, with core members Natalie Loughran and Steffan Morris continuing as the foundational pairing of the Adler Quartet. The Castalian Quartet’s final season reflected the challenges of major engagements adjusting to the transition, including scheduled performances at Mondavi Center and Wigmore Hall and a Princeton concert that was canceled due to dissolution. For fans and concert-goers, Castalian’s legacy remains in the artistry captured on recordings, in residencies, and through future projects by its former members.
