Founded in 2008 by Charlton Singleton as part of Jazz Artists of Charleston, the ensemble evolved when Robert Lewis took over as Music Director in 2019. The group has welcomed notable collaborators and guest artists, including Paquito D’Rivera, Charlton Singleton (Ranky Tanky), Camille Thurman, Wycliffe Gordon, Quiana Parler, and Lowcountry Voices. The CJO’s mission is to celebrate and expand the jazz tradition while presenting dynamic performances that resonate with diverse audiences.

In addition to its rich performance schedule, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra has earned recognition through the Tip of the Hat Award program, with the 2025 honoree being the legendary Houston Person.
