Chineke! Orchestra was founded in 2015 by conductor, bassist, and champion of diversity Chi-chi Nwanoku CBE. Their debut concert took place in September 2015 at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, marking the start of a mission to broaden representation within classical music and create opportunities for Black and minority ethnic musicians. Since then, Chineke! has grown into a globally recognized ensemble that blends bold programming with rigorous artistry, earning a place as one of today’s most impactful orchestras.

As a Resident Orchestra at the Southbank Centre since 2016, Chineke! has become a regular feature of London’s classical scene, including their first appearance at the Proms in 2017. The ensemble was named an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation in 2023, reflecting its national significance and sustained contributions to the arts.

Chineke! expanded into a recording venture with the launch of Chineke! Records in partnership with Decca. The label has released notable projects like Coleridge-Taylor (2022) and Florence Price (2023), as well as The New Four Seasons with Max Richter (2022, Deutsche Grammophon), showcasing innovative crossovers and historically important repertoire with high-profile collaboration.

Looking ahead, 2025 marks the orchestra’s 10th anniversary, celebrated with major concerts at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and US engagements in California and the Santa Barbara market, among other dates.
