Meet Chris Funk, a cornerstone of modern indie folk and Americana. Born November 28, 1971, in Valparaiso, Indiana, Funk has contributed to some of the most beloved indie acts of the 2000s and 2010s. As a longtime member of The Decemberists since their formation in 2000, Funk’s versatility as a guitarist, pedal steel player, mandolinist, and arranger has helped shape the band’s signature sound. He also anchors the string-driven work of Black Prairie and collaborates with Knock-knock, enriching the American roots music landscape with melodic textures and inventive instrumentation.
