Biography
- Origin: Cotton Mather emerged from the vibrant Austin music scene in 1990, building a sound that marries lush harmonies with literate, observational lyrics and a pop-psych/glam-influenced guitar palette.
- Kontiki era: The 1997 release Kontiki earned strong critical praise and extended UK exposure, with Oasis’ Noel Gallagher publicly praising the album. The band then opened for Oasis in Europe in 2000, cementing their international profile.
- Reformation and later records: After reforming in 2012 following a Kontiki reissue, Cotton Mather released Death of the Cool (2016), Wild Kingdom (2017), and Buffalo Nickels (2019). Their discography blends power-pop, psychedelia, and indie rock sensibilities, including the ambitious 64-track Songs from the I Ching project and later releases on The Star Apple Kingdom label.
- Current activity: In 2025, Cotton Mather is actively touring, with appearances at SXSW (Valhalla on Mar 11 and Zilker Brewing on Mar 14) and Texas Mesh Fest in Austin (Mar 8–9). Expect shows that emphasize tight vocal harmonies, intricate guitar work, and a finely crafted set designed for fans of intelligent, hook-driven rock.
