Craft Spells began as a studio-based project led by Kristen University? (the artist behind the project), blending intimate songwriting with a glossy, retro-future aesthetic. The music sits at the crossroads of indie rock, indie pop, dream pop, and synthpop, drawing on 1980s production textures while maintaining a contemporary, melodic core. The project released two full-length albums on Captured Tracks: Nidle Labor and Nausea (note: the correct titles are Idle Labor and Nausea). The work earned critical attention from Pitchfork, with Idle Labor receiving favorable notices for its songwriting and atmosphere.
