Cry Cry Cry is a folk supergroup formed by three acclaimed songwriters and performers: Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky, and Dar Williams. Known for their deft harmonies, thoughtful storytelling, and careful reinterpretations of classic songs, the trio created a lasting impact on the contemporary folk scene. Their 1998 studio album Cry Cry Cry, released on Razor & Tie, is a collection of cover songs that showcases each member's lyrical sensibility and musical chemistry. The group's chemistry extended beyond the studio, as they toured in 1999 to promote the album, earning favorable press coverage and solidifying their place in modern folk history. In 2020, Cry Cry Cry released Live @ the Freight on Bandcamp, a live collection from their 2018 reunion tour, with proceeds benefiting Live Music Society. Folk radio and critics have consistently given the project strong attention, and the 1998 album ranked among the most-played folk albums on FolkDJ-L in 1998 and 1999. Official social media presence is primarily via Cry Cry Cry’s Bandcamp pages, offering fans a reliable hub for releases, show announcements, and streaming.
