Artist Background
- Founded in 1992 by Dana Tai Soon Burgess as Moving Forward: Contemporary Asian American Dance Company; renamed to Dana Tai Soon Burgess & Co. in 2005 and finally to Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company (DTSBDC) in 2013.
- Named the Smithsonian Institution’s first choreographer-in-residence at the National Portrait Gallery (2013–2014); later designated the Smithsonian’s first resident dance company (2016).
- Recognized as a U.S. State Department cultural envoy for over two decades with international tours spanning more than 30 countries.
- Award highlights include Mayor’s Arts Award (Emerging Artist, 1994; Excellence, 2005), Pola Nirenska Award, seven Metro D.C. Dance Awards, Fulbright Senior scholarships for dance, Selma Jeanne Cohen Dance Lecture Award (2021), and the Aaron Stein Memorial Award (2021).
