Denis and Katya is an English-language chamber opera in two acts, running approximately 65 minutes with no intermission. Conceptualized by composer Philip Venables and librettist/director Ted Huffman, the work uses four amplified cellos, video, and in-ear monitoring to create an intimate, intense tapestry. The production explores a gripping true story: the 2016 livestreamed final hours of Russian teenagers Denis Muravyov and Katya Vlasova during a standoff with police. The world premiere took place at Opera Philadelphia during O19 in September 2019, and the piece quickly gained international recognition for its stark storytelling and innovative sonic design.
