Dieter Flury is a Swiss-born flautist and musician whose career spans the globe and decades of classical performance alongside high-profile orchestras. Born in 1952 in Zürich, he studied with renowned instructors Hans Meyer and André Jaunet, and earned a mathematics degree from ETH Zürich, illustrating a unique blend of precision and artistry that informs his musical approach. Flury’s distinguished affiliations include the Vienna State Opera Orchestra (joined 1977) and a long-standing tenure with the Vienna Philharmonic (1981–2017), where he also took on leadership roles as artistic director and manager (2005–2014). Since 1996, he has shared his knowledge as a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
Today, Flury’s influence extends into recorded music with Navona Records releases such as The Unfolding Flute (2020), Aero (2020), and Dimensions Vol. 5 (2023), alongside earlier collaborations like J.S. Bach: 4 Flute Sonatas (Dieter Flury & Theo Wegmann, 1990). In 2014, he was recognized with Switzerland’s ambassadorial token of esteem and the Salzburger Provinz Ehrenbecher for his service, underscoring his impact across European classical music. Flury retired from the Vienna Philharmonic in 2017 and continues to perform, teach, and inspire new generations of musicians.
