Digital Underground emerged from the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1980s, led by Shock G (Humpty Hump) and Chopmaster J. They fused funk with live instrumentation and a playful, irreverent style that helped redefine West Coast and alternative hip hop. Their music blends party-ready grooves with sharp social commentary, creating a sound that’s both infectious and influential.

The group’s rise accelerated with Sex Packets (1990), powered by the hit The Humpty Dance. The single climbed to US Hot 100 and topped the Billboard Rap Singles chart, and the album earned platinum status. Digital Underground also played a crucial role in launching Tupac Shakur’s recording career with the 1991 track Same Song, marking Tupac’s earliest studio appearance.

Throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s, DU released six studio albums and multiple compilations, including Sex Packets, Sons of the P, The Body-Hat Syndrome, Future Rhythm, Who Got the Gravy?, and..Cuz a D.U. Party Don’t Stop!%. Today, the legacy continues through the DUNxG project and ongoing social channels, even as Shock G’s passing in 2021 marked the end of an era. Money-B and newer formations keep the DU spirit alive for fans around the world.
