Do It Yourself Messiah is more than a concert—it’s a community-driven, audience-inclusive performance tradition that began in Chicago in 1976. Historically linked to the International Music Foundation (IMF Chicago) and guided by notable local talent and conductors like Maestro Stanley Sperber, the DIY Messiah model invited participants and attendees to join in a collaborative musical experience. Over the years, this living tradition evolved, with Classical Music Chicago discontinuing the official DIY program, while independent organizations continue to celebrate the spirit of the work through sing-along and participatory performances.
