Down East Dead is a Maine-based Grateful Dead tribute band known for capturing the live energy and intricate jamming the Dead became famous for. Formed in winter 2021 by Rodney Sturdee and James Taylor, with early members including Jeff Merrow and Ryan Benoit, the group has grown to feature players from notable regional acts such as Lazy Lightning, Skyfoot, Hambone, and Merther. Led by a devotion to the Brent Mydland-era sound, Down East Dead also explores material from bands like the Allman Brothers Band, Santana, The Band, Rolling Stones, and Phish, weaving original tunes into sets to keep each show fresh. The band is active in the Maine music scene, bringing their extended improvisations to venues across the region. Their presence is best felt in live performances where the audience can experience extended improvisation and tight, inspired interplay among the musicians.
