Down Hill Strugglers formed in 2008 in Brooklyn, originally under the name The Dust Busters. They later adopted the name that reflects a shared love for rugged storytelling and long journeys through American roots music. The duo’s sound centers on old-time traditions with influences that span Appalachian ballads, Deep South string picking, and Western US fiddle tunes. Their approach honors traditional forms while inviting modern listeners into the narrative of American folk.
Their music gained wider recognition when tracks were featured on the Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack, connecting film audiences with the authentic vibe of traditional folk intertwined with contemporary storytelling. Their 2012 album Old Man Below on Smithsonian Folkways cemented their place in the archive of important American roots music, later earning an Independent Music Award in 2013.
