Dr. Lonnie Smith (1938–2021) was a pioneering organist whose distinctive voice helped shape modern jazz piano and organ fusion. Named an NEA Jazz Master in 2017, Smith’s career spanned decades of influence, performance, and innovation. He earned multiple Jazz Journalists Association awards for his work as an organist, celebrated for breadth of repertoire, improvisational daring, and a sound that blends gospel warmth with hard-swinging jazz.
Smith’s long-running relationship with Blue Note Records culminated in a dynamic late-career resurgence. After returning to Blue Note in 2016, he released Evolution (2016) and All In My Mind (2018, live). His 2021 project Breathe offered a live set with septet arrangements that expanded the trio’s core, featuring collaborators such as John Ellis, Jason Marshall, Sean Jones, and Robin Eubanks—alongside contributions with Iggy Pop on select tracks.
