Eduard Topchjan is one of Armenia’s most influential conductors, shaping the sound of Armenian classical music on the world stage. Born May 6, 1971, in Yerevan, he began studying violin at the Yerevan Conservatory and later expanded into conducting under Ohan Durian, with guidance from legendary figures such as Sir Georg Solti, Claudio Abbado, and Luciano Sante. A founder of the Serenade Chamber Orchestra (which later became the Armenian Chamber Players) in 1991, Topchjan helped cultivate a European reputation through 700+ concerts and multiple CDs released on the Thorofon label. In 2000, he debuted with the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra (ANPO) and soon became its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. Under his leadership, ANPO has toured extensively and elevated Armenia’s presence in the international orchestral scene. His work has earned him prestigious recognitions, including Meritorious Worker of Arts of Armenia (2007), the Gold Medal of the Armenian Ministry of Culture (2011), and a knighthood from Italy (OML) in 2013. In 2015, ANPO was designated a National Orchestra. As ANPO marks its centennial in 2025, Topchjan continues to drive its global engagements across Europe, North America, and Asia.
