El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico is one of salsa music’s most enduring institutions. Founded in 1962 by Rafael Ithier in San Juan, the group earned the nickname La Universidad de la Salsa for its role in shaping the genre. Over more than six decades, the ensemble helped redefine salsa with a shift toward the romantico y sabroso era in the late 1980s, broadening its appeal while preserving its fiery rhythm and tight horn arrangements. The band has earned numerous honors, including induction into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame (2000), a Billboard Latin Music Lifetime Achievement Award (2002), a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2015), and an ASCAP Latin Heritage Award (2017). In 2025, El Gran Combo continued its global legacy with a North American tour featuring select stops in Boston, Miami, and Orlando alongside Grupo Niche. Following the passing of founder Rafael Ithier on December 6, 2025, the ensemble remains active, carrying on the Salsa tradition with the same energy and musicianship that fans around the world have come to expect.
