Elaine Pagels is a distinguished historian of religion, specializing in early Christianity and Gnosticism. Born February 13, 1943, in Palo Alto, California, Pagels earned her BA and MA from Stanford and a PhD from Harvard. She joined Princeton University in 1982 as Harrington Spear Paine Foundation Professor of Religion and moved to emeritus status on September 1, 2024.
