Embodiments: An Exploration of Tagore's Poetic Vision Tickets

Embodiments: Exploring Tagore's Poetic Compositions, known simply as Embodiments, is a boundary-pushing fusion dance project curated by Sanjukta Banerjee. Rooted in Tagore's poetic vision, this two-year residency blends Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, and Kathakali with contemporary movement to illuminate Tagore's humanity and lyricism. Presented as part of Banerjee's guest curatorship with Dancemakers, Embodiments pairs rigorous scholarship with expressive performance for a richly layered stage experience.

Experience a synthesis of sound, gesture, and texture as performers translate Tagore’s verses into movement, supported by sound design that weaves recorded music with classical Indian instruments and modern soundscapes. This Toronto engagement features a dedicated artistic team and a roster of dancers exploring new choreographic languages while honoring tradition.

Artist Spotlight: Sanjukta Banerjee is a renowned Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, and Kathakali dancer with a PhD in Humanities from York University. She is the founder/artistic director of Saugandhikam Dance Academy, and her work with Embodiments has earned recognition across India and Canada, including Natya Kala Rathna (Toronto) and Singar Mani (Mumbai). The project’s dramaturgy is led by Brandy Leary, with collaboration from dancers Harikishan S. Nair, Sukanya Burman, and a talented ensemble that includes Sraboni Guha Mukherjee, Indrani Das, Sarjana Gosh Garrison, Sucheta Puru, and Reetishmaan Bandyopadhyay.
