Empire State Youth Orchestra (ESYO) is a cornerstone of the Capital District’s classical music scene, uniting talented young musicians from around the region. Since its founding in 1979 by Barry Richman, ESYO has grown to serve approximately 600 youth across 14 ensembles, including two full orchestras, wind and string groups, jazz ensembles, percussion, choir, and chamber formations. ESYO is known for a balance of masterworks and living composers, with commissioned works by Adler, Hilary Tann, Dan Cooper, Jin Hi Kim, Clint Needham, Bill Cunliffe, and Michael Davis. As a trusted pipeline to professional opportunities, ESYO maintains strong ties with major venues and a developing home base in the Capital Region.
