Meet the Erie RiverRats, a franchise with roots in Pittsburgh and a defining Erie era. Born as the Pittsburgh RiverRats in 2007, the team relocated to Erie in 2008, becoming the Erie RiverRats through 2009. The club later evolved through league formations—AIFA, UIFL, SIFL, CIFL, and PIFL—settling into the Erie Explosion lineage from 2010 to 2015. Home venues included the Rostraver Ice Garden and Erie Insurance Arena, with 2009 marking a pivotal partnership with Family First Sports Park for a dedicated practice and home base. The RiverRats’ legacy includes two division championships (2011, 2013) and multiple playoff appearances under the Erie Explosion lineage. While there’s no active Erie RiverRats team today and no 2025 schedule, their history remains a key chapter in mid-2000s and 2010s arena football dynamics around Erie. We’ve got you covered for context, memories, and where their footprint lives in the sport’s history.
