Ernie Paniccioli is a celebrated photographer whose lens has helped shape the visual history of hip-hop. Born February 26, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York, Paniccioli is of Cree Native American heritage and served in the U.S. Navy before turning to photography. He became the chief photographer for Word Up! Magazine in 1987 and his work has appeared in major publications such as The New York Times, Life, Rolling Stone, and The Source. Paniccioli's expansive archive is now part of Cornell University’s Hip Hop Collection, and his books document three decades of hip-hop photography. He has been recognized with multiple honors, including induction into the Hip Hop Hall of Fame, the Zulu Nation Human Soul Award, and a Source Icon Award.
