Eugene Alcalay’s journey began in Bucharest on October 13, 1966, and carried him through rigorous studies at Indiana University on a Leonard Bernstein Scholarship, the Curtis Institute, and Juilliard. Mentored by Leonard Bernstein, he later became a Fulbright Scholar in 2003 and helped shape the piano community as the first president of the Southern California chapter of the American Liszt Society (and a co-founder). A Steinway Artist and professor of piano at Azusa Pacific University in the Los Angeles area, Alcalay was celebrated for both performance and pedagogy. His 2008 recording Lyrical Liszt on Partita Records was praised for its lyrical expression and tonal clarity in Liszt’s repertoire. Alcalay graced stages including Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall, while also dedicating time to masterclasses and festival work. While public activity diminished after 2019 due to his passing on June 26, 2019, his legacy endures in recordings, educational initiatives, and the students he inspired.
