Carole Roussopoulos (born May 25, 1945, Lausanne – died October 22, 2009, Sion) was a foundational figure in feminist documentary and portable video. A tireless advocate for women’s rights, LGBTQ+ visibility, labor movements, and anti-imperialist struggles, she helped redefine how documentary can be used to document resistance and everyday life. Often working at the edge of technology, Roussopoulos pioneered the Caméra au poing handheld approach and was among France’s first women to own a Portapak, expanding the reach of independent video production.

Her collaborations with Delphine Seyrig and Ioana Wieder yielded landmark projects such as Maso et Miso vont en bateau (Maso and Miso Go Boating, 1975/76) and SCUM Manifesto (1976). In 1982, she co-founded the Centre audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir to archive and promote women’s rights, struggles, and art. Over a career spanning roughly five decades, Roussopoulos contributed to approximately 150 documentaries, transforming documentary praxis and leaving a lasting imprint on feminist, LGBTQ+, labor, and anti-imperialist cinema. Her work continues to influence scholars and filmmakers, and her legacy is celebrated through archival programs, restorations, and screenings worldwide.
