Fertile Ground is a Baltimore-born soul-jazz collective formed in 1998 by James Collins Jr. and Navasha Daya. Fusing soulful vocals with horn-driven arrangements and Afrobeat/world music influences, the band quickly earned international attention through self-releases and licensing deals that helped bring their music beyond the U.S. shores. Their most notable work, the 2004 album Black Is..., broadened their sound and drew praise from major outlets, cementing Fertile Ground as a distinctive voice in contemporary jazz and soul.
