The Festival of Contemporary Music is a cornerstone of Santa Cruz's summer cultural scene, dedicated to contemporary orchestral music by living composers. Since its founding in 1963 by Lou Harrison and colleagues, the festival has established a reputation for premiering new works and fostering living voices in classical music. Under the leadership of Music Director Cristian Măcelaru since 2017, the festival presents world premieres, West Coast premieres, and commissioned works that push the boundaries of contemporary orchestral repertoire.
