Fires of Varanasi is a dynamic performer project from Ragamala, led by co-artists Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy. Grounded in Bharatanatyam with a contemporary, intercultural lens, Fires of Varanasi expands traditional forms into bold, narrative-driven dance that speaks to journeys, memory, and revival. The work thrives on an eleven-dancer ensemble, an original prerecorded score, and scenic/lighting design by Willy Cessa. Since its world premiere at the Kennedy Center in September 2021, the project has toured across the United States, including performances at the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth and engagements in Minneapolis.
